Ghana's vast resources in ancient folk musical instruments are formally classified into 4 groups by Africa's authority author on African Music, Professor Kwabena Nketsea.
Folk Instruments are classified into Idiophones, Chordophones, Aerophones, and Membranophones.
According to Professor Nketsea of the African Studies Institute of the University of Ghana, Legon-Accra, almost all varieties of available traditional musical instruments in Ghana fall into one of these 4 categories of groups.
1. IDIOPHONES
Idiophones are instruments that produce sounds by vibrating on its own or by using a stick or an iron to strike it. Popular Royal Ceremonial Idiophones are the Dawurokese ( The Big Bell), Dawuro ( African Bell) and Many more:

2. CHORDOPHONES
Of all the musical instruments in Ghana, the Chordophone is the rarest one you can find in places. The most popular variety in rural Ghana and used as part of Ceremonies is the Seprewa.

3. AEROPHONES
Are musical instruments that the player blows air into the instrument for it to produce sounds. Like the Western Record, Brass Instruments, the Royal Courts in Ghana have their own variety of Aerophones called ABENTSIA ( Single), MMENSOUN ( Ensemble ) and NTAHERA ( Special Preserved of Asantehene, Denkyirahene and Okyehene)
4. MEMBRANOPHONES
This is the most popular instrument in the classification. This is any instrument that is made with stretched skin over a hollow tree cut into special size. These are drums of various sizes and designs.

This is an Exhibition prototype of the biggest drum in the Royal Court Music Ensemble called FONTONFROM. The Drum itself is called BOMAA
When played it sounds like the elephant's cry.
